What can you gain from singing in Emmanuel Choir?
THE FOURTH ‘R’ is a report, published in 1998, by the Music Federation, the Music Industries Association, and the National Music Council. It catalogues empirical proof linking the learning of music by children with significantly improved abilities in a host of other subjects, giving skills to youngsters which provide them with the very best abilities that employers are seeking.
A serious worry in education today is that of boys’ underachievement – we are the only boys’ choir in Sutton Coldfield and provide a high standard of music teaching and training to boys aged between 8 and 15. Our own evidence, taken over the past 20 years, shows that boys who have been choristers who have gone to university or to college are the first to admit the value of their time singing in this choir. A number of former members have taken up organ and choral scholarships in various cathedrals. Some are now professional musicians while others retain their musical skills as a life-long hobby and interest.
Here are the findings of the research in the ways in which youngsters involved in music have improved compared with others of the same ability with no musical involvement:
ability in maths
science and engineering
speech fluency in languages
team working and social skills
memorizing capacity
time management skills
learning ability
problem-solving ability
ability to handle performance pressures (Stress)
artistic ability and neatness
The choir is made up of sixteen singing boys supported by adult altos, tenors and basses. Many boys remain with the choir to sing lower parts before taking up College or University courses.
Founded by its director in 1976 and based at Emmanuel Church, the Choir has received standing ovations in packed churches and cathedrals which have been a feature of many foreign tours. In recent years, we have been to Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium and America. At "home", in addition to the regular choral services at Emmanuel, we sing services in many English Cathedrals.
